How to sow it
Romaine stands better than a butterhead and takes summer heat with more grace, which in a British garden mostly means it is slower to bolt when a warm fortnight arrives out of nowhere.
The trick is not growing it, it is the sowing rhythm. A full packet sown at once gives you thirty lettuces in the same week. A short row every two weeks from March to August gives you lettuce from May to October.
