The commonest mistake with lettuce is not a growing mistake, it is an arithmetic one. Sow a packet of Lettuce Romaine in one go and you get thirty lettuces hearting up in the same fortnight — twenty-five of which bolt before you eat them.
Sow a short row every two weeks from March to August and the same packet feeds you from May to October.
A rule of thumb that saves keeping a diary: sow the next batch when the last one germinates. The seedlings appearing are your reminder.
It works the same way for Carrot Chantenay, Red Beet and Turnip Purple Top, at three to four week intervals rather than two. Lettuce Mix is the exception — it regrows two or three times after cutting, so one sowing covers a month on its own.
